Caribbean Linked V participant Kriston Chen shares an open call for works by Caribbean artists/designers to be part of the public exhibition at the end of the residency! See below to find out how to get involved with Caribbean Linked:

News Update: Toofprints (Aruba Edition) Call for Submissions!

I am excited to announce that from August 6-28, 2018, I’ll be temporarily relocating the #toofprints projects to [insert tassa drum roll] Oranjestad, Aruba. I’ve been selected to participate in the 2018 iteration of Caribbean Linked.

For the next couple weeks, I’ll be permitted access to install #toofprints on Caya Grandi / Main Street in the capital city of Oranjestad, Aruba. To learn more about the history of this area, see herefor a PDF.

I welcome anyone and everyone (Dutch, French, Spanish and English speaking) — my type heads — to submit a #toofprints poster for this very special occasion. Same idea, different dimensions. From Ficciones Typografika to Oripeau come hither, let’s write another chapter to this beautiful poster project.

The poster size I’d like to use is a standard A0 size (84.1cm x 118.9cm OR about 33 1/8” x 46 3/4”). You’re welcome to use either a vertical or horizontal orientation for the poster. All languages welcomed. Same black and white like previous #toofprints posters. If you need any assistance, I’ll be happy to help format.’

Email me submissions or questions at hello@notsirk.com. The deadline for submitting is August 20, 2018.

I look forward to collaborating with you. Feel free to share this post.

Caribbean Linked V Black Box Artist Talks

Ateliers ’89 in partnership with Fresh Milk and ARC Magazine is pleased to share the schedule for the Black Box Artist Talks by participants in the Caribbean Linked V regional artist residency! The talks will take place on weekdays between Thursday, August 9th and Monday, August 20th at 7:00 pm each evening at Ateliers ’89, Dominicanessenstraat 34, Oranjestad, Aruba.

These talks are free and open to the public, and will be live-streamed on the Caribbean Linked Facebook Page & archived courtesy of Leo Maduro, Director of Voice of Aruba (VOA) Media Production.

Each artist will give a 30 minute presentation about their work, followed by a question & answer session with the audience, offering the opportunity for conversation and the exchange of ideas.

RSVP to the event on Facebook here.

The ‘Black Box’ at Ateliers ’89 – named for its pitch black walls enclosing a room equipped for multipurpose presentations – becomes a space for sharing artistic practices during each edition of Caribbean Linked. However, the Black Box Artist Talks are not typical lectures; beyond their educational value, these presentations are unique in that they create a rare chance to engage with artists, writers and curators from ten different Caribbean countries in one communal setting. Each of the residents’ home countries share similarities and histories, yet they all have entirely different cultures, influences and perspectives. This diversity stimulates an unmistakable kind of energy in the Black Box that never fails to leave an impact on both the participating artists and the wider public, who also take part in these special moments where the Caribbean becomes linked in spite of distance, language, and preconceptions of what we think we know about one another.

The schedule for the talks is as follows:

Thursday August 9th – Laura de Vogel (Aruba) & Katherine Kennedy (Barbados)
Friday August 10th – Marina Reyes Franco (Puerto Rico) & Irvin Aguilar (Mexico/Aruba)
Monday August 13th – Alex Martínez Suárez (Dominican Republic)
Tuesday August 14th –  Franz Caba (Dominican Republic) & Kriston Chen (Trinidad and Tobago)

Friday August 17th – Averia Wright (The Bahamas) & Raily Stiven Yance (Venezuela)
Monday August 20th – Miguel López (Peru/Costa Rica) & Elvis Lopez (Aruba)
